Description
Mid century handwoven, hand dyed mud cloth textile from the Bogolan region of Mali, West Africa. The design is hand painted using fermented clay as a resist and therefore each piece is the unique expression of the individual artist. The cloth would make an excellent blanket or throw. Old mud cloth textiles are extremely rare and almost impossible to find; virtually all pieces currently on the market are new.The textile is handwoven in 4 3/4" (12cm) wide strips which are sewn together to form one large cloth and design is quite minimalist and modern. This piece is in elegant shades of khaki/brown and natural light cream colored cotton. The textile is 34" (86cm) wide x 61" (155cm) long with a small fringe. It is a very unusual, exceptionally intricate design; a true collector's piece. There are no holes, stains or repairs that I can see, there is some very subtle fading of the print, the textile is in excellent condition give its age and origins. It was woven from raw, unprocessed cotton. It is a lot thinner than is typical so it drapes beautifully and is ideal for being worn as a shawl. The last photo shows a styling idea, not the piece listed for sale.
I recommend hand washing separately with cold water and mild soap. This piece has already been washed and can be used immediately. I have more vintage African textiles so please see my store for other designs. Combined shipping available on all textiles. Please ask any questions prior to purchase. Thank you!
All vintage items are 100% authentic and have been previously worn, often in a traditional environment. Every effort has been made to describe any significant flaws in both words and pictures in the listings however a certain amount of wear should always be expected. Handmade items should also be expected to contain irregularities which I believe adds to their character and does not detract in any way from their quality.
