Carved All Stone Walrus Figurine
Up for sale, is this vintage carved, all stone sculpture of a stylized walrus. The body is made of mottled, serpentine stone. The tusks are stylized, overly accented, white quartzite stone. Other such figurines use soapstone and marble for the tusks. The effect is perfectly charming.
This figure measures about 4" long.
It is in fair but acceptable condition with scratches, scuffs on body and chipping along the rear base edge.
These figurines were mass produced, once plentiful and popular back in the 1970's and 1980's. The original design may have come from Eskimo artists but was then copied, machine made by a template, and distributed to gift shops across America. These carvings are now scarce and becoming harder to find but they do turn up from time to time. Old coillectible. Decorative display. Note: What appears to be a fracture line in the serpentine stone on one side is only a natural part of the stone's matrix.
