Description
Original vintage photograph.It measures approximately
3 1/4 x 4 1/2
Inches. This photograph is of Dmitriy Fedorovich Pogoleev. He was born on February 24th, 1912 in Ukraine. He was recruited in the Red Army on April 28, 1941. During WWII he was an artillery officer and received many orders and medals including. Order of "Alexander Nevsky", 2 orders of the "Red Banner", "For Liberation Of Warsaw" medal, and "For Capture Of Berlin" medal (see screenshot 1). In August 1943, he was considered missing in action (see screenshot 2). This officer was unique because he was awarded the Nevsky order, an award that is usually given to colonels (regimental commanders), but as a captain he was brave and smart enough to command a whole regiment successfully, also an interesting fact: t
here were only 91 German Elefant heavy tank destroyers built during WWII, which makes this man's achievement in destroying two of them a pretty rare occasion.
Reason he got the order of Alexander Nevsky: Between July 19, 1944 and September 5,1944, captain Pogoleev was interim chief of the staff of the regiment, due to the sickness of the chief himself. During August 4-9th, 1944, he personally commanded the regiment in crossing of the Vistula river and despite nonstop enemy fire, he crossed the river without any losses in the staff or equipment. During August 9-13, 1944, he commanded the crossing of ammunition across Vistula river, he organized the crossing with materials at hand and boats. In the battle on August 20, 1944 he successfully organized the interaction of infantry and artillery to complete the battle task (see screenshot 3).
Reason he got the order of the "Red Banner": In the battle on July 8, 1944, on the military line Dolsk'-Torsovice, Pogoleev's division was supporting 820th rifle regiment. The enemy tried to stop our offensive units from the direction of point 204.6 and
counterattack
with the forces of one company and 4 self propelled artillery units (tank destroyers) of the type "Ferdinand" (Elefant). Comrade Pogoleev was the first to discover the enemy's intentions and skillfully corrected the fire of the division. He destroyed 2 of the German tank destroyers and 30 enemy soldiers. In the upcoming 4 hours of battle, the enemy made three counterattacks from different directions, but comrade Pogoleev carried out a close interaction with the infantry units and skillfully controlled the fire of the division and destroyed one rocket launcher, two machine guns and 28 enemy soldiers.
He was awarded one more order of the "Red Banner" in 1945: During the battles to destroy the enemy group in the Polish city of Poznan, in hard conditions for artillery he commanded the fire of the division to support infantry's advance. In that battle the enemy lost: 27 fire points, 7 artillery cannons, 7 bunker, and 120 German soldiers. 32 soldiers and officers were imprisoned by his division.
Interesting fact: There were only 91 German Elefant heavy tank destroyers built during WWII, which makes this man's achievement a pretty rare occasion.
